North Country Trail · Tahquamenon Falls

Hiker shuttle & trail pickup

Book fixed-fare NCT corridor stops online (CR-500, north campgrounds, Woodland Park, and other service-area trailheads). Far-UP and Pictured Rocks NL trailheads are informational — meet at a gateway outside the lakeshore, or call for a custom quote where allowed. Hike the ~4 mile NCT segment between Upper and Lower Falls — we handle the shuttle leg.

Fire danger, burn bans & air quality

Fire danger, burn bans, and air quality along the UP NCT

Check USFS-scale fire danger and Michigan burn bans before campfires. Canadian wildfire smoke can also affect trailheads across the Upper Peninsula — AQI guidance below uses the highest reading among corridor markers; tap map pins for local weather and fire status.

Fire danger & burn bans

USFS-scale fire danger for the UP NCT corridor and Michigan DNR burn status.

Fire danger: Moderate (Low · Moderate · High · Very High · Extreme)

No burn ban reported

USFS-style fire danger for the eastern UP / Tahquamenon corridor. Always verify with Michigan DNR Fire Alert and your campground before any campfire or open flame.

Updated 2026-08-04. Always verify with official sources before any campfire or open flame.

Air quality & health guidance

Highest US AQI among North Country Trail / UP corridor markers (conservative for planning). Guidance follows EPA/AirNow categories for sensitive groups — informational only, not medical advice.

Corridor peak US AQI:49GoodPM2.5 3.9 µg/m³

Air quality is generally good for outdoor activities. During wildfire-smoke season, sensitive groups (young children, pregnant people, older adults (65+), and anyone with heart or lung disease) still benefit from checking AQI before long hikes.

Wildfire smoke from Canada

Seasonal haze can reach the North Country Trail across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Canadian wildfires can send fine particle pollution (PM2.5) and smoke across the UP NCT corridor — from western trailheads near Ironwood through Tahquamenon Falls to the eastern approaches toward St. Ignace — even when the local forecast looks sunny. Hazy skies and elevated air quality index (AQI) readings are common signs.

Before long hikes or a shuttle day with young children, pregnant travelers, or older adults, check the air quality guidance on this page and consider shorter outdoor time when AQI is elevated. Tap corridor map markers for local AQI at trailheads and access points.

Lake and water conditions

Lake and water conditions

Lake & water conditions

NOAA buoy observations, Great Lakes water levels (lake gauges — not ocean tides), USGS river stage for the Tahquamenon, and nearshore wave/swell model at NCT corridor harbors and river mouths. Buoys are often recovered in winter; wave fields may read unavailable offshore even when the harbor model has data.

Conditions are informational only. Weather, UV index (WMO), US AQI, and PM2.5 are from Open-Meteo. Nearshore wave and swell model fields use Open-Meteo Marine. Buoy observations are from NOAA NDBC; Great Lakes water levels from NOAA CO-OPS (IGLD — not ocean tides); river stage/flow from USGS. Air quality health language follows EPA/AirNow categories for sensitive groups (including young children, pregnant people, and older adults) and is not medical advice — see AirNow AQI basics and EPA wildfire smoke FAQs. Bug pressure is estimated from weather and season — not a medical or DNR forecast; bring repellent in peak months.
